Apostrophes Dont matter? Thats A Stupid Claim

Guess where this is from. did you guess the UK? If you did, give yourself a big gold star.

The city of Birmingham has decided that there shall be no apostrophes on its street signs. why is this? Because they’re too confusing, you see. Confusing? I would think having no apostrophes would make things more confusing. St. Paul’s square makes a lot more logical sense than St. Pauls Square. Damn it, I couldn’t even write the one without the apostrophe. My brain would not allow it.

I have read two stories about this, and this one is even more ridiculous. Why in Christ are the makers of signs putting in the apostrophe for no good reason. “Chip’s and pea’s”? “apple’s and pear’s”?

When I was a kid, teachers were always pushing us to look at the words wherever we saw them, even street signs. Now, street signs can’t be used as an educational tool because city councils would rather have them be cute than correct, like Miami, who took the o’s out of the Downtown signs.

Here’s something I didn’t know. apparently the apostrophe has been absent from all signs in the U.S. since 1890. Really? I had no idea. Why was this done in the first place?
