Well, almost four years ago, I asked the question two spaces or one after a period? It appears that today I got my answer. According to this Slate article, the consensus is one space, goddamn it, and stop with the two spaces already!
At least I have an explanation. I guess two spaces were needed in the days of the manual typewriter, and it was pounded into everyone’s head that two spaces were necessary, even though the electric typewriter and computer caused that necessity to disappear.
And it’s true. I used a manual typewriter, but only as a typing learning tool, and even when I started using the good old Apple IIe, I was told to keep doing two spaces.
I wonder why this convention is such a stubborn one to shake?
