Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You

I just had a weird new thing happen to me last night. I was eating my dinner when the phone rang. Keep in mind this is about the third call I got while eating dinner. It came up as a weird number, but I thought I recognized it. I didn’t.

I picked up the phone and was greeted by a freaky recording. I will do my best to quote it. “Hello. This is Liz Sandals, your member of provincial parliament. In a couple of minutes, you will be brought into a live, virtual town hall meeting with thousands of residents of Guelph. I will be available to answer questions about the Ontario budget. You will have the opportunity to ask questions.”

And on it went. I was too busy wondering where the hell she got off calling us and deciding I was going into a meeting right now. I was eating dinner goddamn it. That would be like driving along the street, grabbing people randomly and throwing them in the car, telling them they had no choice but to come. Even if it’s an opportunity to ask questions of someone in power, let me decide to go to a meeting.

She kept talking, and then at one point it sounded like I was about to get dumped into the meeting. Then the recording kept going. I hung up on it.

If you want to call me and invite me to a meeting, fine. But tell me the time and number to call a couple times and leave it at that. Don’t assume I have time right now to go into a meeting, and don’t assume that’s what I want to do right now. I just found the whole thing a bit disrespectful.

Has anyone else gotten any of these calls?
