Of Course Opening Day Should Be A Holiday. Why Is This Even A Question?

So here’s a stupid question. Does the return of baseball deserve its own holiday?

Are bears Catholic? Does the Pope shit in the woods? Of course opening day should be a holiday! I’d also suggest we make holidays out of the start of NHL and CFL seasons while we’re at it.

It’s not like me to get behind most things Budweiser does since the nicest thing I can say about the stuff is often “at least it’s not Coors,” but they’ve got something here.

Like many great ideas, the movement to create Opening Day Day seems to have been hatched over a beer. Or rather, a beer company. Budweiser — which is now owned by a corporation in Belgium, where they play soccer, not baseball — launched a petition drive and advertising campaign using Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith as a pitchman.

Along with Major League Baseball, the company debuted ads on ESPN.com and MLB.com. It is seeking 100,000 citizens 21 and older to sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov within 30 days. By Tuesday, more than 14,000 had registered their approval. The petition says, in part: “Opening Day is more than just the beginning of the season. It’s a symbol of rebirth. . . . It’s an American tradition, and it deserves to be recognized as an American holiday.”

  1. But then, my brother would have even more reason to ruin it. “It’s not so bad that I’m getting married on a Friday, it’s the holiday after all.” *steps back, runs away before explosion*

    1. You just had to, didn’t ya? Hahaha. Gaaaaaaaaaaah!

He should be required to have screens showing the game in the church for the casual fans, plus a separate room set aside with TVs, cold beer and snacks for the rest of us. It’s the least he could do for pulling a stunt like that.
