Don Cameron Is Retiring

June 8th, 2018 update:

Don passed away yesterday. He was 82. Here’s the tribute that aired on CTV Kitchener last night.

Original post:

I’m not, by any stretch of the imagination, a Kitchener Rangers fan (I’m a Guelph Storm guy). But I’m not sure it’s possible to grow up in this area paying attention to radio and television and liking sports without Don Cameron becoming a bit of a fixture in your life. Between his time as one of the sports guys on CKCO TV back when it was still called that and the years upon years upon years of Rangers games he’s called, he became one of those familiar voices I like to talk about, the ones that will be around forever simply because they’ve always just been there doing what they do. But as usual when this subject comes up, it comes up because there’s no such thing as forever.

No, Don Cameron isn’t dead, even though this post totally sounds like the beginning of a so long. He is, however, retiring, putting an end to a nearly 60 year broadcasting career. To put that into perspective, that’s nearly 2 of my lifetimes. So to say he’s going to be missed is a pretty huge understatement.

I may not like the team he called, but I like listening to Don Cameron call them. So much so that listening to the Rangers play the Storm from the Rangers’ point of view has never really bothered me, which is one of the highest compliments I think I can pay a sports announcer. I’m sure whoever replaces him will do a perfectly fine job, but boy is that ever going to be weird for a while.

Have a nice retirement, Don.

  1. Uh-oh, he’s hangin’ up his clonkity headphones. Hope that dream you had that one night doesn’t come true and he doesn’t come after you for not being a Rangers fan.

    1. You know what’s funny? I came dangerously close to calling the post Don Cameron Hangs Up His Clonkity Headphones just to make you laugh.

As for the dream, why do you think I said such nice things about him? It’s all about avoiding sleep vengeance, hahaha.

  2. What the heck? My comment got chompled. I said I guess we don’t need to worry about him reading this now…but he could just waltz into your dreams like ghosts do, clonkity headphones and all.

    1. Nope, no chomping.  It was emailed to me three times, which likely means they all posted.  Oh well.  The guy’s a legend.  He deserves three comments.

I realize he’s in his 80s, but I was still shocked to hear that he’d passed.
