Anyone who knows me knows that I have 0 time for war. I think it’s one of the stupidest, most pointless things that humans have ever come up with. But at the same time, I also have infinite respect for those who are willing to risk their lives to fight in one.
With that said, I’m saddened to hear that Canada’s last known World War I veteran, John Babcock, hasdied at the age of 109.
By his own admission, he didn’t have the most impressive war record. Once he was discovered to be under legal serving age, he wasn’t allowed on the front lines. But no matter what he may think of his service, he’s still a big part of Canada and the world’s history. He was the last living link to an era that I hope won’t soon be forgotten.
All I can say is thank you for volunteering to do something that I would likely never have the guts to do, and thank you for sharing your story with the world. Hearing what veterans put themselves through made a big impression on me as a kid, and I can only hope that some day it might make that same impression on those in power who seem incapable of learning from history.
