If That News Story Everyone Should See Comes From One Of These Sites, It’s Fake. Leave It There

From what Carin tells me, Facebook is full of idiots who pass way too much of their time mindlessly sharing news from fake sites as if it’s real. Kind of like the internet in general, only you’re forced to refer to these persistently uncritical retards as your friends and therefore have to be diplomatic when calling them out on it, up to and including not using phrases such as persistently uncritical retards. Not only is this unfortunate, but it also represents one more reason why I’ve had almost zero desire to sign up for Facebook. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to have to use phrases like that one, but knowing that I can when I have to without feeling overly guilty about it is nice.

With all of that said, I would like to direct your attention to this here handy guide, so that the next time I have to call people bad names you hopefully won’t be one of them. The 9 Worst Fake News Sites

I’ll let you click through to read the commentary, but here’s the list so that you can quickly scan it before you hit share on that next stupid thing.

  • World News Daily Report
  • Free Wood Post
  • Empire News
  • Huzlers
  • Betoota Advocate
  • Lightly Braised Turnip
  • The Borowitz Report
  • National Report
  • The Daily Currant

Alright, first of all, what sort of person looks at a site called Lightly Braised Turnip and thinks yup, this here’s some hard hittin’ journalism? No need to answer that, I already took care of it.

And why the Borowitz hate? Not everything the guy writes is gold, but he’s certainly given me more than a few laughs over the years. What I like about him is exactly what they’re ripping apart here, that his stories are almost plausible yet obviously fake if you’re in possession of half a clue.

Oh, and the Onion is still not real, guys.

So there you have it. Something else to put into your don’t fall for all the goddamn hoaxes you toolbox toolbox. Use it, share it, make the internet just a bit more critical.
