I’m sure many of you have heard by now that George Carlin, arguably the greatest comic of all time, died yesterday at age 71.
Right from the day that one of my friends snuck me a copy of the A Place for My Stuff album when I was 10 years old, Carlin became one of my favourite people. When I say that I don’t just mean in comedy, I mean in the world. My friends and I thought it was cool that he said fuck a lot, but I also knew there was something more there. As the years went by and I was able to hear more of his work and think about it in a more mature way, I realized just how much there was. It might sound crazy to some of you, but George Carlin routines have a lot to do with why I am the way I am. Everything from being the silly wacky guy to being the ranting type or the one that picks everything apart looking for something to make fun of, there’s a little bit of Carlin in all of it. I wish I had even a quarter of the talent he had, but whatever I do have, I owe a lot of it to him.
I’m sure many people will write many better tributes than I ever could, so I’ll leave you with
this clip,
which is not only hilariously funny, but pretty much spot on.
Thanks for the memories George, and Joe bless you.
