Even though there likely won’t be any criminal charges filed inthe Lower Merion School District laptop spying case, what there will be isa settlement paid by the District to the 2 plaintiffs.
According to a statement, Blake Robbins will receive $175,000 while Jalil Hassan will get $10,000. That doesn’t sound half bad until you hear what the lawyers are getting. Thanks to the District, they’re walking away with a cool $425,000! I know that lawyering isn’t an easy job, but there’s no way that the cost of covering the legal bills should more than double what the people who were actually wronged will be getting. I know it happens all the time, but it’s such a slap in the face and just shows those people who think that the system is rigged against the public that they aren’t entirely wrong in thinking so.
But all of that said, at least they’re getting something and Lower Merion is paying for its foolishness. I hope this serves as a lesson to other districts not to go down a similar privacy invading path.
