Macho Man Randy Savage, Dead At 58

Wow. I’m not sure what to say. Macho Man Randy Savage is gone. He died today in a car accident when he suffered what his family is saying is a heart attack behind the wheel. He was 58.

Wrestlers die all the time for all kinds of reasons and it’s always sad, but this one is especially hard because it’s not the typical wrestler death that we’re unfortunately getting used to and because well, this is Randy fucking Savage. Other than Hulk Hogan, I’m not sure there’s a name or character more recognizable. Even if you don’t like wrestling and never watch it, chances are you know who Macho Man is. You’ve probably done his voice, or jumped off of high things to drop flying elbows on stuffed animals, pillows, a younger sibling or one of your not so bright friends. To a whole generation of us, Macho Man and Hulk Hogan were wrestling. Sometimes we hated them and other times they made us laugh, jump for joy or cry, but no matter what they were doing, as kids we hung on all of it.

And now it’s over. Yes, it’s been over for a long time, but there’s over and then there’s over. Macho Man hasn’t made a wrestling appearance since I want to say 2004 when he showed up in TNA for a few days and that one was kind of sad, but there was always the hope that one day he’d come back and go out the right way, as a Hall of Famer. I’m sure he’ll be a WWE Hall of Famer one day, but it won’t be the same. We won’t get to hear that song and see him walk down the aisle wearing one of those crazy outfits ever again.

Here’s a nice look at his career by Mike Johnson of PWInsider.

And I can’t end this without posting this. As bad as it is and as much fun as I make of his journey into rap music, I have to admit I kinda like this song. If nothing else it’s memorable, just like the Macho Man.
